Your mission

Part of the Foundations Staff, as the Engineering Manager for our Database Reliability Engineering (DBRE) team, your mission is to ensure the availability, and resilience of our data infrastructure. You will lead a team of engineers focused on managing and evolving our database systems, enabling secure, scalable, and observable data services that empower engineering teams to build confidently. Your role will balance technical depth with leadership, ensuring operational excellence while guiding strategic improvements in how we store, access, and protect data.

Your responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team of DBREs focused on supporting production-grade relational and non-relational databases
  • Define and drive the strategy for database reliability, security, and scalability in alignment with engineering and business priorities
  • Foster a culture of ownership, learning, and continuous improvement around our database systems and operations
  • Oversee the health of our production data infrastructure: backup strategies, replication, disaster recovery, high availability, and monitoring
  • Partner with the rest of Engineering to ensure data systems integrate seamlessly into our broader platform
  • Guide the adoption of best practices in schema design, query optimization, data migrations, and performance tuning
  • Ensuring that the team delivers the technical solutions to achieve the team’s OKRs while matching our standard of quality
  • Support career development, performance management, and hiring for the DBRE team
  • Your qualifications

  • Proven experience as a technical leader or engineering manager, with a background in database reliability, infrastructure, or site reliability engineering
  • Strong hands-on knowledge of production-grade databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, Cassandra, or other distributed data stores)
  • Solid understanding of database performance tuning, schema design, and query optimization
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code, observability tooling, and CI/CD practices
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., GCP, AWS, or Azure) and container orchestration (Kubernetes)
  • Comfortable managing on-call rotations, incident response, and implementing postmortem culture
  • Ability to guide and grow a team: mentoring engineers, leading technical conversations, and supporting career progression
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across engineering, security, and product teams
